This visa allows U.S. employers to hire Canadian and Mexican professionals under the USMCA agreement for 3 years, covering specific occupations.
The TN is simpler than other employment visas because the visa is not needed in advance. Canadians can apply directly at the border with their passport, application, and documentation. Mexicans must mail their application to USCIS.
Canadian or Mexican citizens who have a job offer from a U.S. company should begin the application process early to avoid any delays in your start date, especially if an appointment is necessary. Candidates must have a post secondary education that matches the job offer from the U.S. employer.
To qualify for TN nonimmigrant status, the applicant must:
Be a citizen of Canada or Mexico.
Have a prearranged full-time or part-time job offer with a U.S. employer (not self-employment).
Ensure the job’s profession is listed under the USMCA agreement such as engineer, accountant, scientist, lawyer, teacher and others.
Have qualifications that match the job’s profession (typically a minimum of a 3-year bachelor degree related to the profession).
