First Category-Based Selection for Canada’s Express Entry

Canada's Immigration Minister, Sean Fraser, announces the introduction of category-based selection in the Express Entry system.

First Category-Based Selection for Canada’s Express Entry

The Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Sean Fraser, has announced the introduction of category-based selection in Canada's Express Entry system which has been anticipated by the immigration community since earlier this year. We think that the new category-based selection will likely run parallel to the Federal Skilled Worker, Federal Skilled Trades and Canadian Experience Class programs under Express Entry. This may affect some skilled foreign workers. However, the effect should be minimal if they score over 470 in the current system.

The category-based selection will invite prospective permanent residents who are in certain occupations and/or proficient in French. The initial focus will be on individuals in the following fields:

  • healthcare
  • science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professions
  • trades, such as carpenters, plumbers and contractors
  • transport
  • agriculture and agri-food

The first selection or draw will happen this summer. The Canadian government will provide further details on the timing of invitations for specific categories and the application process in the coming weeks.
