New Open Work Permit & Fee Waiver for Iranians in Canada

The Canadian government recently announced new measures to support Iranians currently residing in Canada and wish to extend their temporary status.

Effective March 1, 2023, Iranians in Canada can apply for a new permit from inside the country, making it easier to extend their temporary status and move between temporary streams. This will allow them to continue studying, working, or visiting family without the fear of being forced to return to Iran.

Applications from Iranians in Canada will be processed on a priority basis to ensure timely decision-making.

The government will also waive certain processing fees for Iranians who wish to extend their stay in Canada, as well as passport and permanent resident travel document fees for citizens and permanent residents of Canada in Iran who wish to leave. These measures aim to alleviate some of the financial burdens that Iranians may face when navigating their temporary residency status.

Furthermore, the Canadian government is exploring changes to other programs, such as the Human Rights Defenders stream, which is one of the few programs in the world with a dedicated, permanent immigration program for those who protect and promote human rights.

These new facilitative measures are in effect as of March 1, 2023, and individuals can apply until February 28, 2024.
