On May 26, 2023, Sean Fraser, the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced a series of measures to expedite family reunification processes and provide support for newcomers. These initiatives aim to facilitate quicker and easier reunions for families while also assisting them in establishing themselves in their new Canadian homes. The new measures include:
Faster Processing Times for Spousal Applicants
One of the key measures introduced by Minister Fraser is the implementation of faster temporary resident visa (TRV) processing times for spousal applicants. This improvement means that families can expect their applications to be processed within 30 days, significantly reducing the waiting period.
New processing tools for spousal TRV applicants
Specific processing tools will also be dedicated to spousal TRV applicants, ensuring their unique circumstances are considered. These changes have already been put into practice, resulting in an impressive approval rate of 93% among applicants who have benefited from these new tools.
Open Work Permits for Spousal and Family Class Applicants
Recognizing the importance of employment in supporting newcomers and their families, Canada has introduced the open work permit for spousal applicants and their dependent children residing with their sponsor in Canada. These work permits can be obtained as soon as a complete permanent residence application is submitted under the spouse or common-law partner in Canada class (SPCLC) or other family class programs.
This initiative provides spouses, partners, and dependents with the opportunity to seek employment while awaiting the finalization of their permanent residence status, allowing them to contribute to their household's financial stability.
Extension of Open Work Permits
Minister Fraser also announced that spousal applicants and other open work permit holders whose permits expire between August 1 and the end of 2023 would be eligible for an 18-month extension. This extension option mirrors the recently introduced offer for individuals with expiring post-graduation work permits. By extending the open work permits, the Canadian government aims to provide continued opportunities for employment and support for those awaiting permanent residence, ensuring they can sustain themselves and their families during this transitional period.
