L-2 Visa for Dependents

The spouses and dependents of L-1 visa holders are eligible to receive an L-2 visa. The L-2 visa allows the holder to work while they are in the country, in contrast to the H-4 visa, which is the dependent visa for H-1B spouses and only allows for work authorization if the H-1B holder possesses an approved Immigrant Visa.

The L-2 visa has a straightforward application process. It can be processed at the same time as the L-1 applicant or at a separate time if the L-1 applicant has reason to file the two separately.

What do you need to do to apply for L-2 Visa?

  1. Complete the DS-160 Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application
  2. Pay the application fee: $160 (may vary depending on your country of origin)
  3. Book two visa appointments: one for biometrics and the other for the interview
  4. Submit all your supporting documents
  5. Attend biometrics appointment and interview
  6. If your visa is approved, the consular officer will let you know immediately
Note: the validity of the L-2 Visa will be the same as the L-1 Visa.

Other benefits of the L-1 Visa:

  • Compared to the H-1B visa is only available in a limited quantity every year, the L-1 visa is not subject to any numeric limits
  • Companies can apply for blanket petitions for their employees to qualify for an L-1 Visa. The L-1 Blanket petition allows employees of multinational companies who are transferring to the U.S. as managers, executives, or those with specialized knowledge to apply directly at the U.S. consulate for the L-1 visa
  • The L-1 visa is frequently renewed for a duration of 5 to 7 years
