New Open Work Permit for Recent Canadian PR Applicants

The Honourable Marco E. L. Mendicino, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship announced today that, beginning July 26, 2021, individuals who have applied for the recently opened pathway to permanent residence will be eligible for an open work permit while awaiting the results of their application.

Eligibility Requirements for the Main Applicant

To qualify for this one-time open work permit, the applicants must show that they

1. have successfully submitted an application under one of the new permanent residence pathway’s streams

2. held a valid work permit, or were authorized to work without a work permit, at the time their permanent residence application was submitted

3. hold a valid work permit that is set to expire within the next 4 months

4. have temporary resident status, maintained status or are eligible to restore their status at the time their open work permit application is submitted

5. are in Canada at the time their open work permit application is submitted

6. were employed in any occupation at the time their permanent residence application was submitted

7. meet the language requirements of the stream under which they applied at the time their permanent residence application was submitted

Eligibility Requirements for Family Members
Eligible family members in Canada may also be issued an open work permit.

1. is a family member (spouse, common-law partner, dependent children) and has been included as an accompanying family member in the TR to PR Pathway application

2. Is in Canada

3. is 18 years of age or older at the time the work permit application

Effective Date and Expiration

July 26, 2021 to December 31, 2022
