13 More Countries Citizens Can Travel to Canada Visa-Free Now

The Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Sean Fraser, revealed the addition of 13 countries to the electronic travel authorization (eTA) program.

Air travel to Canada will now be accessible to passport holders from 13 specific countries without needing a Temporary Residence Visa. However, travellers must:
  • either possessed a Canadian visa within the past 10 years or,
  • currently hold a valid non-immigrant visa for the United States.

Eligible individuals include passport holders from the following countries:
  • Antigua and Barbuda
  • Argentina
  • Costa Rica
  • Morocco
  • Panama
  • Philippines
  • St. Kitts and Nevis
  • St. Lucia
  • St. Vincent and the Grenadines
  • Seychelles
  • Thailand
  • Trinidad and Tobago
  • Uruguay

What is an Electronic Travel Authorization?

The Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is a requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to Canada by air. It is electronically linked to the traveller's passport and remains valid for up to five years or until the passport expires.

With a valid eTA, travellers can make frequent short stays in Canada (typically up to six months per visit). An eTA is not necessary for travel within Canada.

However, it's important to note that having an eTA does not guarantee entry to Canada. A border services officer will check your passport and other documents upon arrival. It is your responsibility to convince the officer that you meet the eligibility requirements for entry into Canada.

About visa-free travel to Canada

Over 50 countries have visa-exempt status for entering Canada; however, for most of them, an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is required when arriving by air.

Canadian entry requirements for United States citizens only include the need for an eTA or visa if they plan to work or study in Canada.

However, nationals of countries not exempt from visa requirements or an eTA must apply for a Temporary Residence Visa (TRV), commonly referred to as a visitor visa.
