Canada just announced the application intake process for the Parents and Grandparents Program in 2022. IRCC will send out 23,100 invitations to apply to help Canada reach their goal of accepting up to 15,000 complete applications. Invitations will begin later this week.
IRCC will make a selection from individuals who indicated a desire to sponsor their parents and/or grandparents from the fall 2020 pool. Back then, prospective sponsors had three weeks to express interest by filling out a form on the IRCC website.
After accepting about 10,000 applicants for the PGP 2020, IRCC held a lottery. IRCC used the same pool to select approximately 30,000 applicants for the PGP 2021 last year.
Who is eligible?
- You filled out an interest to sponsor form on the IRCC website between 12 p.m. ET on October 13 and 12 p.m. ET on November 3, 2020.
- You’re at least 18 years old
- You live in Canada
- You’re a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or a person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act
- You need to prove that you have enough money by supporting the individuals you want to sponsor. (You must present proof of your income. To combine your incomes, you might have your spouse or common-law partner co-sign.)
One of the main criteria for PGP eligibility is Minimum Necessary Income (MNI). This proof of requisite income is required only after expressing interest in sponsorship via the online form. However, those applicants who are chosen and requested to apply but do not have the required minimum income will have their applications rejected.
For the 2021 Parents and Grandparents program, IRCC will assess sponsors on their income for tax years 2020, 2019 and 2018. This table applies to you if you live in any province except Quebec.
Sponsors who live in Quebec
The immigration ministry of Quebec conducts an income assessment of Canadians who reside in Quebec and desire to sponsor a parent or grandparent following the provincial income guidelines.
Interested sponsors must submit a written undertaking to the IRCC and the Government of Quebec. This agreement specifies the length of time the sponsor will be liable for the family members they are sponsoring after they are granted permanent residency in Canada.
For inhabitants of all Canadian provinces, excluding Quebec, the obligation for parents and grandparents is 20 years. The pledge is valid for a period of 10 years for Quebec citizens.
Parent and Grandparent Super Visa
Didn’t get into the pool in 2020? Maybe have your parent(s)/grandparent(s) visit you.
The Super Visa, which has a 10-year validity period and permits holders to stay in Canada as visitors for five years without having to renew their documentation, may also be available to parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens.
